Guide/Part Five · Save, protect, recover
Password protection
Encrypt a document on disk so only someone with the password can open it. This is real encryption, not obfuscation.
- Choose File ▸ Protect Document.
- Choose Set password, enter it twice, and click OK. The document (prose, versions, comments, notes, and metadata) is rewritten encrypted immediately.
Opening a protected file asks for the password in one prompt (unlimited retries). A lock glyph beside the document name is the standing sign it's protected. Click it to change or remove the password from inside the open document.
Warning
There is no password recovery. If you lose the password, the document cannot be opened by anyone, including you. Store it safely. Exports and printouts are deliberately unprotected; they're plain artifacts of an action you chose to take.
