Export plain text & Markdown

Export your manuscript as a plain-text or Markdown file, for another app, a website, or a quick read anywhere.

  1. Choose File ▸ Export as Plain Text or File ▸ Export as Markdown.
  2. Pick where to save it. GLASS suggests the document's name.

The status bar shows Plain text exported or Markdown exported when the file is written. Both are UTF-8 text files that open in any editor.

  • Markdown (.md) keeps the structure: each chapter becomes a top-level # heading, and headings, bold and italic and the other character formats, links, lists, tables, and scene breaks come along. Footnotes and endnotes are written as [^1] notes, gathered at the end.
  • Plain text (.txt) is the words alone. Footnotes and endnotes are numbered and listed at the end.

A Markdown file exported from GLASS can be brought back in with Import a document, chapters and formatting included.

Note

If you're an editor working in a review copy, these exports aren't available: your edits go back to the owner with Return Edits.
