Guide/Part Three · Structure a manuscript
Chapters & headings
Use a Chapter Marker and GLASS gives it a heading, a fresh page, and a margin ribbon, and numbers it for you. The Chapter Marker is the backbone of what makes GLASS special, and will be a powerful feature when sending a manuscript to KILN for layout work thanks to its smart, algorithmic automation. Not only is the Chapter Marker useful for navigation, it allows you to store individual notes per chapter, and also allows you to drag and drop chapters to change the chapter order at any time. The numbers will update for you, and the content of the chapter will always move properly, without having to cut and paste it yourself manually.
- Put the cursor in the line that starts the chapter.
- Choose Insert ▸ Chapter Marker. An inline editor opens right on that line, with a control bar beneath it.
- Type the chapter Title if you want one. The number is filled in automatically from the chapter's position.
- Set the shared look: Number style, Case, Separator, and Alignment. These apply to every chapter at once.
- Press Enter or click away to commit.
A chapter always begins on a new page. Double-click a heading (or click its margin ribbon) to reopen the editor. To turn it back into ordinary prose, right-click and choose Remove Chapter Marker.
You never type the chapter number. It follows the chapter's place in the book, so reordering renumbers everything automatically.
