Accessibility

Reach every part of GLASS from the keyboard, use your system's contrast theme, and make the interface larger.

The menu bar from the keyboard

On Windows, press and release Alt, or press F10, to put the focus on the File menu. Then:

  • ← and → move between menus, and an open menu moves with you.
  • ↓, Enter, or Space opens a menu. ↑, ↓, Home, and End move within it, skipping items you can't use right now. Type a letter to jump to the next item that starts with it.
  • → opens a submenu and ← closes it.
  • Esc closes one level at a time, then puts you back where you were.

On macOS, the menu bar is the system's own, so use the macOS keyboard shortcut for it (⌃F2 by default, set in System Settings ▸ Keyboard).

Right-click menus

Press Shift+F10 / ⇧F10, or the Menu key on a Windows keyboard, to open the right-click menu at the cursor, with the same commands a right-click there would show: table, note, suggestion, and spelling commands included. It works in Draft and Review Mode. Move through it with the arrow keys, choose with Enter, and close it with Esc, which puts you back on the page.

The Insert ▸ Table grid on Windows works with the arrow keys too: press Enter to insert.

Moving between areas

Press F6 to move from the page to the toolbar, an open panel, and the status bar, and back to the page. Shift+F6 / ⇧F6 goes the other way. On the page, Tab indents, so F6 is the way out without the mouse. When the keyboard reaches the toolbar, it shows and stays up, even if you've set it to retreat.

Contrast and motion

  • GLASS follows the Windows contrast themes (Settings ▸ Accessibility ▸ Contrast themes). Every panel, menu, and dialog keeps a visible edge, and selected and focused items use your theme's highlight color. The page stays white, as it will print.
  • Every button shows a green focus ring when you reach it with the keyboard.
  • With your system set to reduce motion, the toolbar and panels appear without sliding.

Interface size

Open Preferences and, on the Appearance page, choose an Interface size: Small, Default, Large, or Larger. It makes the menus, toolbar, panels, and dialogs bigger or smaller and leaves the page at the size you zoomed it to. To change the size of the page instead, use Zoom.

Screen readers

GLASS tells screen readers where the cursor is, what's selected, and when formatting changes. To read the document, NVDA, Narrator, and VoiceOver can browse the pages on screen from a region named Visible pages: headings, paragraphs, lists, tables, and footnotes, in order. It follows you as you scroll, so scroll to reach a later part of the document. In Review Mode, pending insertions and deletions read as inserted and deleted text.
