Spelling and Grammar check

In Review Mode, the Spelling and Grammar check walks you through every issue in the document, one at a time.

  1. In Review Mode, press F7 or choose Tools ▸ Spelling and Grammar.
  2. For each issue, the dialog shows the flagged text in context, and the same text is underlined on the page. For a grammar issue, it also explains the problem.
  3. Click a suggestion to put it in the Replace with box, or type your own. Then click Replace or press Enter.
  4. Or click Skip to pass over this issue, Skip all to pass over every instance of it in this check, or, for a spelling issue, Add to dictionary so it isn't flagged again.

The check uses the English you chose in Preferences, on the Writing page, under Proofreading language. See Live proofreading.

The check isn't available in Draft Mode. There, turn on live proofreading to see issues underlined as you write.

Note

If you own the document, your fixes change the text directly, unless an Edit Pass is open: then they arrive on the pass as suggestions, like the rest of your Review edits. If you're an editor, you need an active Edit Pass, and each fix becomes a tracked suggestion for the owner to accept or reject. Without a pass, the check offers Open Edit Pass instead.
